Alexey Sorokin is a Russian sports official who served as the leader of Russia's successful bid to host the 2018 FIFA World Cup. He is also the former president of the Russian Football Union (RFU).

Early Life and Career

Alexey Sorokin was born in Moscow, Russia, on January 25, 1962. He graduated from the Moscow State Institute of International Relations with a degree in international relations. After graduating, he worked as a diplomat in the Soviet embassy in Washington, D.C.

Career in Sports Administration

In 1992, Sorokin joined the RFU as a vice president. He was elected president of the RFU in 2012. Under his leadership, Russia successfully bid to host the 2018 FIFA World Cup. Sorokin stepped down as president of the RFU in 2019.

Controversy

Sorokin has been involved in several controversies during his career. In 2015, he was accused of corruption by FIFA investigators. He was also criticized for his handling of the 2014 Winter Olympics in Sochi, Russia.

Awards

Sorokin is a recipient of the Order of Friendship, a state award of the Russian Federation, and the Order of Merit for the Fatherland, Fourth Class.
